Arne Jacobsen

STAIRCASE

1st Year

As a group we carried out research on Arne Jacobsen and his ‘design hotel’ The SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen. Discovering the materials, textures and architectural drawings in order to complete a to-scale architectural model.

Using laser cut acrylic pieces to really showcase the staircase, showing the floor thickness whilst also revealing all the details of the staircase itself. Just as the original staircase was, we constructed the stair from a single metal sheet and suspended it using wire rods. Using images and descriptions of the staircase, we replicated its colour and texture using different  spray paints.

This project was a process of trial, error and patience. We learnt to delegate tasks and stick to self-set schedule. Learning new fabrication skills for model making and taking beautiful photographs, all skills that will be transferrable to consecutive projects.
